Platform Holly
Project type
Civic, Adaptive Re-Use
Date
2025
Location
Santa Barbara, CA
Reimagined as a cultural destination, this conceptual proposal transforms Platform Holly into an open-air concert venue that celebrates California’s coastal identity while giving new purpose to retired offshore infrastructure. The design envisions the platform as a dynamic public space—part performance hall, part civic landmark—floating at the intersection of industry, landscape, and art.
The central idea is to retain the platform’s existing structural framework and repurpose it to support a lightweight performance canopy, advanced acoustic systems, and flexible staging. Tiered seating terraces, viewing decks, and elevated walkways provide multiple vantage points that immerse visitors in the surrounding ocean panorama. The design emphasizes sustainability by utilizing modular construction, minimal intervention to the platform’s core structural elements, and opportunities for renewable energy integration.
Public access is conceived through a combination of ferry service and controlled docking, creating a unique arrival sequence in which the venue slowly reveals itself against the horizon. At night, programmable lighting transforms Platform Holly into a beacon along the coastline—equally striking during concerts or at rest.
More than an entertainment venue, the proposal explores how existing offshore infrastructure can be re-envisioned as community assets. By merging performance, landscape, and engineering, the Platform Holly Concert Venue demonstrates a forward-looking approach to adaptive reuse on the water.
